My tribute to the awesome bassist Paul Gray of Slipknot who passed away 2010. I really liked the photo this is based on, Paul seems almost shy with his pose :)

Slipknot has always been one of my absolute favourite bands, and is in fact the band that got me to listening metal music in general. I really hope I can still some day see the guys performing live, I never have... I might be doing similar pieces of the whole band eventually.

Done on a page of my sketchbook (A5 paper, HB, 2B and 4B pencils used). I really should get some better paper for the pieces I spend more time with, you can really see the grainy texture the rough sketch paper has. Tweaked ever so slightly in PS to get the contrast right. Photo reference used from a picture I found online.

Love this work and agree with what you said about the 'shy' pose. :) A fitting tribute to Paul.
I feel the pain of your paper dilemma, it seriously took me a long time to get paper that I liked to draw on that also scanned well. Surprisingly, I've found that a relatively good paper at a relatively low cost is from my A3 WHSmith's sketchbook. Some parts still look a little grainy but it's mostly fine. Although that's probably unhelpful if you're not from the UK, I don't think WHSmith's exists anywhere else...

Thanks for your comment. Although the paper is far from optimal, I thought of doing all the nine members on same material to get similar results on all the pieces. The drawings look a lot different in real life, much smoother and better looking in my opinion, but ain't that always the case with scanned drawings, eh? I haven't really been looking around for some better paper yet (I got some cheapo A4 sketch paper which is a bit better than this) but I'll keep an eye for WHSmith and give it a try if possible, thanks for the recommendation :)

I think I should re-scan this, though, as fiddling with the scan settings has given me much better results than this, this is way too bright actually.

Doing all nine members on the same material is a good plan, I think. Scanning in my drawings always makes me a bit frstrated because they never look quite right. /: WHSmith has given me the best results so far, I think my best drawing ended up on their paper. :)

That's probably a good idea, if you've found a better setting - I did see some of your other Slipknot ones and they were quite a bit darker, so I see what you mean about the brightness.

Yeah, there's also the difference that this one is scanned with a different scanner and computer. I think the best scan so far is the latest one (Shawn) because it looks the most like the drawing in real life.

Two of the finished ones (Chris and Jim) are actually taken with my crap point-and-shoot camera so the quality between the four is quite a mixed bunch. I'll perhaps end up scanning them all on the same settings to get the end result more consistent. Perhaps when I have finished the rest five ;)
